This first-class establishment was founded by Mr. John Handley, in these same premises, in the year 1834. The concern is the oldest in Glasgow in its line, and the business is widespread. The firm now consists of Messrs. Thomas and James Handley, trading under the style of John Handley & Sons, and they are manufacturers of high-class trunks, portmanteaus, and sample cases.
In addition to solid leather travelling goods there is a selection of portmanteaus, cases, bags, trunks, &c., in strong brown canvas, black enamelled canvas, brown leather, strong heavy overland canvas, all strongly bound with hide leather ; expanding-top portmanteaus or coat oases, made of the best leathers; dress portmanteaus, super-solid leather or pure butt leather trunks ; also Cape, Continental, cabin or state-room, boarding-school, and overland trunks, made in best materials. The premises, which comprise warehouse and workshops, are extensive, and consist of three flats. About a dozen hands are constantly employed.
The members of the firm (who are both members of the Corporation of Hammermen) are exceedingly well known in Glasgow, and are respected both in business and in private life.
