J. Chalmers & Co.
J. Chalmers & Co., Bakers &c., 72, Hamilton Place, Hillhead.—
Among the leading and most noted establishments that are devoted to the baking and confectionery branches of trade, a very leading position is deservedly occupied by the thriving and well-known firm of Messrs. J. Chalmers & Co., whose business is one of the oldest in the city. It was originally founded as far back as 1835 by the late John Chalmers. The business is now conducted by James Chalmers (brother of the founder) and other partners, and under his management a very extensive trade has been developed. The connection being chiefly among the most influential and leading families, nothing of an inferior or common nature is to be found connected with this establishment, which ranks among the very foremost in the trade.
The premises occupied comprise a commodious establishment, that includes bakehouses and the usual departments incidental to a first-class business. The firm employ workmen who have been, selected from among the most skilled and experienced in the trade. The leading specialities consist of confectionery, pastry, and family bread. Special attention is devoted to the subject of cleanliness, a very important point in this connection, and the premises are kept in excellent order. A large trade has been developed among a very extensive and influential connection, not only in the immediate locality, but also in outlying districts. The business is very ably conducted in every department, and ranks among the leading houses engaged in the same branch of trade.
