JOHN STEPHEN
A SON of the late Alexander Stephen, shipbuilder, Dundee, the
Chairman of the shipbuilding firm of Alexander Stephen & Sons, Limited,
Linthouse, was born at Arbroath in 1835, and was educated at Dundee Academy, the
Andersonian University, and Edinburgh University. In addition to his immediate
business, he is Chairman of the African Lakes Corporation. Among other
organisations he is a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders,
and, taking strong interest in philanthropic enterprise, he has had much to do
with the Livingstonia and Lovedale African Missions, he is a strong upholder of
the United Free Church, a Trustee of the Ferguson Bequest, and Honorary
President of Govan Young Men's Christian Association. A Liberal Unionist in
politics, he plays golf, and has travelled in Egypt, Palestine, and South
Africa. He is a Justice of the Peace for the Lower Ward of Lanarkshire. In 1866
he married Eliza, daughter of John Wilson, silk merchant, Glasgow.
