ROBERT
PIRRIE
PARTNER with his younger brother in the firm of Pirrie, Foote
& Co., Mr. Robert Pirrie has been engaged as a merchant during the greater part
of his life. He is a member of the Established Church of Scotland, but
entertains charitable and friendly feelings towards other branches of the
Christian Church. In the same way, while his political sympathies are with the
Conservative party, and he has taken an active part on this side at election
times, he has seen no reason to become unfriendly with those who differ from
him. For many years he was a Director of the National Bible Society of Scotland,
and in 1905 became one of its Vice-Presidents. Among other institutions also he
has long been a Director of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children,
and of the Glasgow Sick Poor and Private Nursing Association.
Mr. Pirrie greatly enjoys the game of chess, and for several
successive years has been elected Honorary President of the Glasgow Chess Club,
a compliment which he appreciates very much.
