ELDER son of the late Charles Cleland, papermaker, Glasgow. Mr. Cleland was born at Maryhill, 15th April, 1867, and was educated privately and at Glasgow Academy. From 1891 to 1907 he represented Maryhill Ward in Glasgow Town Council, and was senior magistrate of the city in 1901, the year of the last Industrial Exhibition. He has also taken a deep interest in politics, and, while Vice-Chairman of Glasgow Conservative Association, is a member of the Conservative and Junior Conservative Clubs. He is a J.P. for Lanarkshire, and a J.P. and Deputy-Lieutenant for the County of the City of Glasgow, and in 1907 he received the honour of membership of the Royal Victorian Order. In 1888 he married Jessie Houston, daughter of the late William Burrell, ship owner, Glasgow, by whom he has three of a family.
