THE senior partner of the firm of R. & C. Allan, ship owners, is a son of the late Alexander Allan, of the Allan Line. He became a member of Glasgow School Board in 1894, and has been its chairman since 1903, in succession to the late Sir J. Neilson Cuthbertson. A total abstainer, he exerted himself from the first, along with the late Mrs. Black, to inaugurate in each class under the Board a scheme of weekly lessons on temperance, and for the purpose he supplied the teachers with text books on the subject.
