Only 400 copies of the book were printed, of which the copy held in Glasgow University Library and digitised is number 304. The book includes a list of 271 subscribers, some of whom ordered more than one copy, making a total of 292 copies accounted for before publication.
Many of the subscribers have the same family name as the men featured in the book and are assumed to be descendants and relations. Although the majority have addresses in Scotland, there are several from England and one from India.
As well as individuals there are a few institutional subscribers, including the Mitchell Library, Glasgow University Library and the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons' Library.
